Top Tips For Buying Dining Furniture

Top Tips for Dining Furniture buying…Before you start shopping!

Look at your space before you start shopping ; our showroom is large and the setting can be deceptive so before you visit, look at the space you have, measure an ideal size that you would like; consider doors, windows, walkways and other pieces of furniture that the room may have such as sideboards or display cabinets…and then jump in the car armed with your information!

Don’t worry if you forget your tape measure, we have plenty on hand for you to borrow!

Tables; How many people would you like to seat? Think about how many people might use your table on a day to day basis. If you would like it to accommodate guests, consider an extending table and the minimum and maximum sizes (or people) that might need to be seated.

Chairs? Benches? Settles? Your choice of seating can have a profound affect in setting the tone for your dining experience but don’t be lulled into forgetting the practicalities also!

When thinking about your choice of dining table, always remember to allow extra room for the back of the chairs; for example traditional farmhouse chairs typically add approximately 30cm-40cm to the width of the total space so if placed on both sides of the table you will need to allow 60-80cm more to move around the table. More upright chairs such as Ladderbacks and leather dining chairs with save space and for complete flexibility consider benches and settles which we can make to fit exactly between the legs of tables for a superb storage and seating solution in one!

Watch out for cheap tables! These typically place legs in awkward places which makes tucking in chairs difficult and dining at times could be uncomfortable. Whilst ALL OUR TABLES HAVE DETACHABLE LEGS, you my find that tables of lesser quality have fixed legs which can make getting them in your home and into the right room difficult for you.

Wood Finish; whilst a scratch on a lacquered finish often requires expensive refurbishment by professionals (or the use of well positioned plants or table cloths to conceal!) painted, waxed and oiled finishes not only accentuate the natural beauty of the wood itself but should an accident occur, they can be re-worked at less expense, more often than not by yourself, making them the favourite of craftsmen and customers alike.

As the old saying goes; “You get what you pay for” and this is so true with all furniture. As a general rule; the harder the wood the more durable it is and understandably the more expensive it is as generally hard woods take longer to grow. That’s’ not to say soft woods don’t have their place and for farmhouse tables you can’t get better than a beautifully scrubbed down table.

Consider your budget and lifestyle and go for the wood and finish that best suits your needs.
